In Germany, Coolmore Stud sponsored the Group 3 Preis Der Winterkonigin 2010 at Baden Baden on Sunday and appropriately it was won by Djumama (IRE), a daughter of Coolmore stallion Aussie Rules. The winner was bred by Colin Kennedy out of the Barathea mare Western Sky. Aussie Rules stud-mate High Chaparral continued his rich vein of form in the Southern Hemisphere when his son So You Think won the Group 1 Cox Plate at Moonee Valley in Australia. This was the fourth Group 1 win for the 4yo, trained by Bart Cummings and it was the second Group 1 win in consecutive weekends for High Chaparral following the success of Descarado in the Caulfield Cup the previous weekend.
Coolmore Stud announced last week that Rip Van Winkle has retired from racing and will take up stallion duties at the stud in 2011. The 4yo will be the first son of Galileo to stand alongside his sire at Coolmore. Rip Van Winkle was a racehorse of the highest calibre with a Timeform rating of 134 which puts him equal to his illustrious father. In total he three Group 1 races, the Sussex Stakes and Queen Elizabeth II Stakes over a mile and the Juddmonte International over ten furlongs. His trainer Aidan O’Brien paid tribute to his racing career commenting; "Everyone knows how good I always thought he was. His big thing was his incredible speed. We knew he had that from the first day he worked. He did win the Juddmonte International over a mile and a quarter this year, but he was a miler first and foremost."
