At Leopardstown on Sunday Ballybacka Lady (IRE) dented some reputations to give trainer Pat Fahy a major success in the Group 3 Derrinstown Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial. Fahy is better known for handling jumps horses but he produced this filly in peak condition to beat Sapphire Pendant in clearcut fashion under a good ride from Fran Berry. The Carlow based trainer was naturally thrilled with the outcome and said; “She broke smart today which made all the difference. She had decent form in the book and it is unbelievable to have a filly like that. She’ll go for the Guineas at the Curragh now; Fran said she is well-entitled to take her chance.” Ballyback Lady, owned by Patsy Corcoran was bred by Sean O’Keefe and is by Coolmore stallion Hurricane Run out of stakes placed 2yo winner Southern Queen. She was bought by her trainer at Goffs Orby Sale for only €18,000 and is now worth many multiples of that.
