The Moyglare homebred INDIA RAIN (IRE) showed great heart when battling to win the 5f EBF 2yo Fillies Maiden at Cork yesterday, from a much more experienced rival in the Joseph O’Brien-trained Damselfly (IRE), who finished a short-head second.  Trained by Dermot Weld, his son and assistant trainer Kris commented post-race “India Rain travelled well and she was brave as she looked to have the race won but she got tired and had to battle back when the second filly challenged her. We have no grand ambitions with her and we may go for a nursery in a couple of weeks' time”.  A daughter of Holy Roman Emperor (IRE), she is out of Anywaysmile (IRE) (Indian Ridge), who is a half-sister to the Group 1 Santa Anita Sprint Championship Stakes hero and Group 1 Golden Shaheen Stakes runner-up, Rich Tapestry (IRE) (Holy Roman Emperor (IRE)).  The second dam, Genuine Charm (IRE), is a full-sister to 2,000 Guineas and multiple Group 1 winner Refuse To Bend (IRE).

Another owner/breeder to enjoy success on the same card was HH The Aga Khan, when his homebred 3yo filly HARRANA (IRE) accounted for the 1m 2f 3yo+ Maiden.  Also trained by Dermot Weld, she progressed on two previously solid runs in useful maidens to score here by three-quarters of a length, from the Aiden O’Brien-trained Spanish Steps (IRE) (Galileo (IRE)).  By New Approach (IRE), her dam Hazarafa (IRE) (Daylami (IRE)) was a Listed winner herself and is a half-sister to last season’s Dual Epsom and Irish Derby winner Harzand (IRE) (Sea The Stars (IRE)).  Hazarafa (IRE) has a yearling filly by Camelot.
