Mossy Joe races to victory in Stratford

There was major Irish interest in the Stratford Foxhunters Champion Chase at Stratford on Friday with the top three in the betting Salsify (IRE), Mossey Joe (IRE) and Tammy's Hill (IRE) all trained in Ireland.

Salsify was hot favourite to follow up his victories in the big events at Cheltenham and Punchestown but he could never land a blow as Mossey Joe destroyed the opposition winning by twenty lengths.

Part of a small string trained in county Clare by Declan McNamara, Mossey Joe has always had huge ability but has picked up a few injuries over the years that have halted his progress. He seems to have been nursed back to full health by McNamara and a tilt at the Galway Plate could be on the cards for the 10yo.

The manner of his success was enough to crown Mossey Joe the Champion Hunter Chaser at the Irish point to point awards the following night with a rating of 142, the highest ever given to a horse since the ratings were introduced.

It was also appropriate that ITM were in attendance at Stratford on Friday as sponsors of the Handicap Hurdle. It was won by the Phil Middleton trained Sail And Return. It was the culmination of a three day ITM trip to the UK that also took in racing at Worcester and various trainer stable visits in advance of the upcoming Irish NH store sales.
