ROYAL ASCOT: DAY 1

19 June 2018

The Charlie Appleby-trained BLUE POINT (IRE) notched a third win at Ascot Racecourse when getting up in time to land the Group 1 Kings Stand Stakes under William Buick. Battaash (IRE) set a strong pace and looked like winning but a late run from BLUE POINT (IRE) saw him win with plenty in hand.

Bred by Oak Lodge Bloodstock he is a Shamardal half-brother to Group 2 Railway Stakes scorer and Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes runner-up Formosina (IRE). Their dam, Scarlett Rose, is a well-related half-sister to multiple Group 3 winner Tumbleweed Ridge, as well as Tumbleweed Pearl, dam of Group 2 Queen Mary Stakes winner Gilded (IRE). Descendants of the family include Listed winner and Group 2 placed Blue Nose.

The Godolphin-owned four-year-old is just the second horse of his age to win the five furlong contest in the last 10 years.

Meanwhile, Champion National Hunt trainer Willie Mullins was successful for a fourth time in the Ascot Stakes with a comprehensive win from LEGOSTOVEGAS (IRE). The John Donohoe-owned mare executed three furlongs out to gain an advantage and stay on well to claim the £90,000 contest.

Bred by Keith Griffin she is a daughter of Coolmore Stud sire Footstepsinthesand. Now seven times a winner, she is the best of four runners out of the Montjeu (IRE) mare Reine De Coeur (IRE).
