A drop in the weights saw ASHKARI (IRE) bounce back to form in Sunday’s Group 3 Sand Classic Cup in Macau. Third in the 2016 running, the Peter Leyshan-trained gelding had won twice over the seven furlong distance and his latest victory came by two and a quarter lengths.

Bred by Sheikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, ASHKARI (IRE) is a half-brother to Group 3 winner Mystic Dawn (IRE). They are out of an unraced half-sister to dual Group 2 winner Byron, while the second dam is Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes winner Gay Gallanta, herself a daughter of Prix Morny second Gallanta.

A High Chaparral (IRE) half-brother to ASHKARI (IRE), named Fort Apache, holds an entry in this year’s Epsom Derby and is in training with Hugo Palmer.
