Irish- Breds fill first five places in ITM Gimcrack at York

02 September 2013

The Kevin Ryan trained ASTAIRE (IRE) (Intense Focus) led home a remarkable 1-2-3-4-5 for Irish-bred horses in the Group 2 Irish Thoroughbred Marketing Gimcrack Stakes on the final day of the meeting.  All five were also graduates of Goffs.  Now owned by Mrs Angie Bailey, ASTAIRE (IRE) first went through the ring at Goffs November Foal Sale where he was sold by his breeder Ballylinch Stud to Amanda Skiffington for €45,000.

His sire, Intense Focus, also stands at Ballylinch Stud.  He won the Group 1 Dewhurst Stakes in 2008, and has made a smart start to his stud career, with two other Group performers already to his name in HEART FOCUS (IRE) (2nd in the Group 3 Grangecon Stud Stakes) and HOME SCHOOL (IRE) (2nd in the Group 3 Tyros Stakes), both bred and trained by Jim Bolger.

After the race Kevin Ryan confirmed that ASTAIRE (IRE) would be following the same path as his two previous winners of this race (Amadeus Wolf and Blaine) with the Group 1 Middle Park now his target.  Ryan commented

“…it has to be a Group 1.  They are all good horses who win the Gimcrack and it’s very special to win this race.”

Orby graduate and previous Group 3 winner WILSHIRE BOULEVARD (IRE) was second in the Gimcrack, for Aidan O’Brien, followed by Goffs November Foal PARBOLD (IRE), with Orby purchase CABLE BAY (IRE) fourth and the David Elsworth trained JUSTICE DAY (IRE) in fifth.
