Enigmatic but certainly supremely talented, PAKISTAN STAR laid down convincing claims for being crowned Hong Kong’s Horse of the Year with a comfortable success in the Group 1 Champions & Chater Cup at Sha Tin.

PAKISTAN STAR, trained by Tony Cruz, raced close to the pace in the 12 furlong showpiece under Tommy Berry and once finding clear running with a furlong and a half to race, he shot clear to score readily by almost two lengths from stablemate Exultant (IRE), formerly Irishcorrepondent (IRE) when third in last year’s Irish 2,000 Guineas.

Sired by Shamardal, who stands for a private fee at Darley’s Kildangan Stud in County Kildare, PAKISTAN STAR has been the most talked about horse in Hong Kong since a remarkable winning debut in July 2016.

However, he has also been a bit of a rogue, famously stopping in a race at long odds-on last June which forced a string of barrier trials to convince the local stipendiary stewards that a repeat would not occur.

It appears no coincidence that his racing manners have improved since receiving a visit by renowned ‘horse whisperer’ Monty Roberts late last year and Sunday’s success followed on from his victory in the Audemars Piguet QEII Cup last month.
