PHOENIX FLIES HOME TO WIN ACOMB
22 August 2018
PHOENIX OF SPAIN (IRE) looks a horse with a future after coming
with a late surge to win the Group 3 Acomb Stakes, going away at the finish, on
the opening day of the York Ebor Festival. Given a signature Jamie Spencer
ride, the Charlie Hills-trained grey raced last of eight entering the straight
and waited until the final two furlongs to make headway, leading inside the
final furlong and ran on to score by a length and a half. Favourite Watan
chased him home, finishing two lengths clear of dual winner Persian Moon (IRE).
PHOENIX OF SPAIN (IRE) was later described as a ‘big, heavy
horse’ by his trainer and looks an improving type, having finished fourth on
debut, before winning impressively next time out. The Group 1 Racing Post
Trophy is next on the agenda for the colt, who runs in the colours of Tony
Wechsler and Ann Plummer.
The son of Lope De Vega (IRE) provides an exciting update
for his full-brother, who is catalogued as Lot at the Goffs Orby Sale. The pair
were bred by Mrs Cherry Faeste out of the Key Of Luck mare Lucky Clio (IRE),
who is now the dam of four Stakes horses. The second dam, meanwhile, produced multiple
Group winner Special Kaldoun (IRE).
