The Richard Fahey trained Sandiva (IRE) looked a high class filly when she won a listed race at Naas back in June. She lost nothing in defeat at Royal Ascot and was back in the winner’s enclosure in France on Saturday when claiming the Group 3 Prix De Calvados at Deauville. Another high profile purchase by Sheikh Joaan Bin Hamad Al Thani, Sandiva was an authoritative winner and looks ready for a further rise in class. A daughter of Coolmore stallion Footstepsinthesand and Miss Corinne, Sandiva was bred by Denis McDonnell of Parkway Farm in Cork and she is a half-sister to the very smart Richard Hannon trained Wentworth (IRE) in addition to fellow stakes performer Iirsh Cliff (IRE) Sandiva’s victory was also a timely boost to her half-sister by Approve who McDonnell will offer for sale at Doncaster next week. Another weekend winner that gave a sales bound sibling a boost was Royal Empire (IRE). The winner of Saturday’s Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury has a full brother by Teofilo going to Goffs Orby Sale from Knocktoran Stud. It’s a pedigree featuring numerous high class winners; the dam Zeiting herself was a multiple stakes winner who has subsequently produced multiple stakes winners and Royal Empire may bid to enhance the pedigree even further by tackling the Group 1 Irish St Leger in September.
